Father Zachary was born in Chicago, IL, on September 21, 1932, the son of Robert Hayes (a policeman) and Elizabeth Lehman. He is one of seven children - four boys and 3 girls.

His most memorable experience was meeting President John F. Kennedy just two days before he was assassinated. His most gratifying experience as a friar was having been taught by Pope Benedict XVI. The most unforgettable friar that he met was Herbert Braun (in Germany). Friar Braun was a chaplain in the Kaisar's army.

Fr. Zach enjoys alpine skiing.
